Londonist just got word that Gourmet Restaurant Group, owners of the Tiffinbites brand, recently acquired Indian take-away chain the Bombay Bicycle Club. The deal coincides with the acquisition of Indian food and restaurant group Vama (which consists of a fine dining resto on Kings Road as well as large scale catering operations) and makes Gourmet Restaurant Group the largest Indian restaurant group in the UK. According to GRG’s CEO and founder, Jamal Hirani, the... [continue]

Preview: Tanqueray Tables on July 17, 2008

Psst ... Wanna sample a selection of canapés accompanied by a few gin-based cocktails in a classy outdoor venue that’s usually not open to the general public? Yeah, us too. That’s why we’re looking forward to checking out Tanqueray Tables. “A series of intimate cocktail evenings hosted by the makers of Tanqueray gin and the folks from toptable.co.uk,” Tanqueray Tables is offering two occasions this summer to indulge in “an intensity of flavours through... Londonist asks that most pressing of daily concerns: where to go on your lunch break. Tiffinbites 23 Russia Row (off Gresham Street) EC2V 7PG 020 7600 4899 11.30am-10pm (Monday-Friday) Expect to Pay: around £8 for mains, maybe £10-12 if you want a starter and/or a drink With all those workers filing in and all that money flying around, you’d think the City of London would teem with halfway decent lunchtime options. Alas, really good... [continue]

How about a 30 minute hands-on workshop with a professional chef during your next lunch break? Well, if you can spare the 18 quid head over to Wigmore Street's newly opened L’atelier des Chefs for a session of Cook, Eat & Run. Londonist popped in L’atelier’s shiny dream kitchens recently to discover we’re actually pretty handy in the kitchen and left feeling fairly confident we’d be able to replicate the tasty lemon scented pastasotto... Every month, the folks at Fancyapint? get together to vote for their top ten favourite pubs. These are recently visited pubs that for one reason or another (the ambience, the booze, the company) stuck in their collective memory. Kindly, these booze-savvy Fancyapinters have decided to share their latest picks with Londonist and all our readers. Cheers! Here’s the current list from Fancyapint? in no particular order of merit. They assure us that all ten... [continue]

Shoot & Eat: Hamgipak on July 10, 2008

Since the weather has been flip-flopping on us this summer, Londonist has been wishing for hot soups more often than in previous summers. And what better way to warm oneself than a kimchi jjigae? The fiery red, spicy broth is made with pork and kimchi and comes to your table bubbling away in its own little black pot. Looks are a bit deceiving though; there's a gentle heat to the soup and it's nothing... [continue]

We’ve just recently come across Unchained, a super cool and incredibly handy lil London-based website 'designed to help people find the very best Unchained shops’ in the London. By 'unchained' they mean businesses owned and run 'by real people with a passion for what they sell,' and let’s face it: those types of businesses are sadly becoming fewer and farther between at too rapid a rate. Here’s our interview with Dave Birss and Lea... [continue]

Remember that late night/early morning Waffle House pit stop on I-75 halfway between Hotlanta and Chattaboogie when the coffee flowed freely and fried eggs ran just how you like ‘em … or … how about that day at the Shore, sitting atop the Windmill devouring a steaming heap of chilli cheese fries with Bruce’s Born to Run blaring from some car radio barrelling down Route 36? No? Well, if any of that sort of... [continue]

When we heard about the Battersea Power Station was to be open to the public (thanks Annie Mole!) over the past weekend, we rushed down with camera ready. And, yes indeed, the iconic landmark was there to be roamed around in all its massive glory. The folks putting on the show made us check out a presentation on the station’s future and sign a waiver before letting us but they were nice enough to... [continue]

Londonist loves a burlesque soirée, especially when held at a swank venue such as the Gore Hotel and accompanied by a fantastic meal. Friday night’s Burlesque Soirée at Kensington’s Gore Hotel - featuring the exceptionally lovely Miss Polly Rae and her naughtily coy Hurly Burly Girlys - was brassiere loads of fun and well worth the £39 cover (which got ya in the door drinking a cocktail and enjoying a three course meal with... We’re not sure if there’s going to be any American style fireworks display at the Gore Hotel this Friday but if you’re looking to add some bang to your 4th of July, consider the Gore’s Burlesque Soirée with Miss Polly Rae and the Hurly Burly Girlys. The Soirée will take place from 8pm until 1am, with performances at intervals between 9.30 and midnight. Costumes will be provided by vintage lingerie specialist “What Katie Did”,... [continue]

Despite the fact that Londonist’s favourite London tapas bar - Laxeiro - wasn’t vending, Tapas Fantasticas at the Old Truman Brewery presented a delicious opportunity to sample some of the best tapas in London as well as some especially gorgeous tapas from the Rioja region of Spain. To wash all those tasty tapas down, about 20 wineries from Rioja were kindly on hand with an impressive range of vino – from perky whites to... [continue]
