Blueprint For Bus Design Competition on September 11, 2008

Time is running out for TfL's competition to design a new Routemaster - it closes in just over a week. But a recently republished article from the Blueprint archive reveals that this is not the first time Londoners have been solicited for their ideas on how to build a better bus. For its 25th anniversary issue, on sale now, architecture and design journal Blueprint has chosen a selection of the best journalism over its... [continue]

Nature-ist: St. Andrew's Gardens on September 11, 2008

What is it? The least distinguished of Bloomsbury's old burial grounds. An inscription shows it was converted for public recreation in 1885 and opened by Lady John Manners, one of Disraeli's social set. It's opposite the London Welsh Centre, so perhaps it should be St. David's, but we don't want to see a canon turf war. Where is it? Between Grays Inn Road and King's Cross Road, hidden behind a UCL residence hall. One... [continue]

Foodie wordsmith Charles Campion’s London Restaurant Guide 2009 is now available from Profile Books. This ‘09 edition is his biggest to date, featuring reviews of more than 400 London eateries. After our first skim of this handily-sized guide, we reckon Campion’s take of the London restaurant scene is as good as any (and considerably better than most). The writing’s pithy yet friendly and the listings are thorough and well organized. The tag lines accompanying... [continue]

Hooker Hotline on September 8, 2008

Bored and lonely gentlemen, put your phones down - it ain't what you think. Quite the opposite, actually. Mark Clarke of Bedford Hill, a Tory parliamentary candidate, is waging what he describes as a one-man war against vice in his neighbourhood. Fed up with ladies of the night proffering their business round his 'ends, the 31-year old has vowed to disrupt their work so they can't practice the world's oldest profession. Taking email tips... Forget London on the Cheap for a minute. If you're a true London geek with a proper taste for public transport then you need to check the piggy bank and make sure your eBay account is active. London Transport Museum if having a big ole auction with some awesome lots, if you can bid big enough. A tour of the disused Aldwych tube station - of much film fame but no longer open to... And reduced-fat ice cream mings for Britain. So we all live in misery. Until now. By good fortune, this Londonista stumbled across a jewel in the crown of frozen dessert purveyors and so we... Back in dreary February, Londonist was keen to sing the praises of newly opened Bea’s of Bloomsbury. Recently, we went back for a birthday cake and were pleased to find Bea et al are continuing to provide Londoners with quality yumminess. In closing, we’ll leave you with three words: chocolate truffle cake.... [continue]

Government Gang Guide on September 2, 2008

In another desperate attempt to do something useful about curbing youth crime and tackling gang culture today the Home Office published "The Gangs: You and Your Child". It's an attempt to help parents identify whether their kids might be involved with gangs and deliver sound advice about what to do about it. A bit like when they used to tell you to hide under the kitchen table with some tinned food when the bomb... [continue]

Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuubba hubba! The Gore Hotel’s at it again with another Burlesque Soirée, this time to celebrate London Fashion Week “with a decadent show by London’s hottest Burlesque act, Miss Polly Rae and the Hurly Burly Girlys.” Londonist was at the Gore’s last Burlesque Soirée. We sincerely hope to make it to this one and reckon this time round will be just as va-va-voom (yet exceptionally stylish) as the last. London Fashion Week Burlesque Soiree... [continue]

Worcestershire Sauce chocolate? Why not? Marmite and chocolate? Hey, you might just love it. Such unusual morsels are the wondrous creations of award winning chocolatier, Paul A Young. Of course, for the less adventurous but nevertheless chocolate craving folk, Paul makes a variety of more standard goodies, such as the most incredibly gorgeous brownies that you can’t even fathom because they’re just that damn good. As the days get shorter and autumn trudges forward,... [continue]

MI5 To Go Gay on August 18, 2008

James Bond would be neither shaken nor stirred by the news today that MI5 is to launch a recruitment drive for gays and lesbians to join the government's security service. The story was leaked to the Sun of all places (which we reckon isn't particularly well-targetted at gays and lesbians in particular). This is, however, a real turn-around. Until the early 1990s, a gay person couldn't join the London-based national security service as they... [continue]
