Joseph Merrick, a Victorian Londoner who suffered from Proteus Syndrome, is often better known by his nickname of the 'Elephant Man'. After a chance encounter with a prominent British surgeon, Merrick lived out his days at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel until his death in 1890.
A small but fascinating exhibition inside the hospital, open to the public, remembers Merrick's time there and even carries a full-size replica of his skeleton.
The Royal London Hospital Museum is located in the former crypt of St Philip's Church, Newark Street, E1 2AA. The museum is free to enter (although donations are appreciated) and open Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm.
