What we're reading

Things to do

WHAT WOMEN WANT: A century ago, when some women were allowed to vote for the first time, brands started to see women as consumers in their own right, rather than represented by their fathers or husbands. This exhibition shows how marketing has been aimed at women in the last century. Several events take place throughout the exhibition too. Noho Studios (Fitzrovia), free, book ahead, 21-30 November

A CHRISTMAS CAROL: This won't be the only production of A Christmas Carol in London over the coming weeks, but it's probably the only one with a cast of more than 200 people. This musical version of Ebenezer Scrooge's story is set in 1930s Britain, and is aimed at ages 5+. Chickenshed Theatre (Southgate), £10-£22.50, book ahead, 21 November-5 January

MIDWEEK MULBERRIES: Join this lunchtime walk to find half a dozen mulberry trees hidden in London,  along with other mulberry secrets including an 18th century mulberry garden and the gardens that used to be the Inner Temple's orchard. Meet at Farringdon station, £12-£15, book ahead, 12.30pm-1.30pm

HOLOCAUST KNOWLEDGE: When the second world war ended, mass displacement made it tricky for Jewish families to find out what had happened to their loved ones. Many took months or even years to track them down, often with tragic news, sometimes unable to trace them at all. This lecture reveals how many details of what happened in the Holocaust didn't come to light until the latter part of the 1940s. The Wiener Library (Russell Square), free, book ahead, 3pm-4pm

BRAIN INFECTIONS: How do bacterial, viral and parasitic brain infections happen, what's their effect, and what can we do to stop them? That's the gory but fascinating topic of this free lecture. Museum of London, free, just turn up, 6pm-7pm

A night of candlelit photography at Southwark Cathedral

VICTORIAN MAPS: For one of the final events in the store's current premises, Stanfords welcomes cartographic publisher John Lee to talk about the Victorian maps of England by Thomas Moule. The maps were published in the 1830s and show the minute details of the country at the time. Stanfords (Covent Garden), £4, book ahead, 6.30pm-7.45pm

BLACK HOLES: Fascinated by black holes? This LSE lecture looks at them from a philosophical standpoint; can we even be sure they exist? Will we ever know what's inside them? And could the many science fiction works that have been written about them help scientists to get to the facts? Clement House (Aldwych), free, just turn up, 6.30pm-8pm

ONE NOTE AT A TIME: The world-famous New Orleans music scene came to a crashing halt in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina brought devastation to the area. This documentary tells the story of local musicians determined to play again, who worked hard to return the music to New Orleans. The screening is followed by a Q&A with director Renee Edwards. Harris Academy South Norwood, £5-£8.50, book ahead,7.45pm-10.30pm

YONCÉ EXPERIENCE: Unleash your inner diva at The Yoncé Experience, a club night dedicated to all things Beyoncé. Dance to tracks from Beyoncé and Destiny's Child all night long — or if that's making you a little Crazy In Love, escape to the other room where R&B, disco, funk, pop and soul tunes are the soundtrack. XOYO (Shoreditch), £5, book ahead, 10pm-3am

Good cause of the day

All acts at this comedy show have some sort of link to our health service — some are doctors and surgeons, others are patients. They're all taking to the stage at the Museum of Comedy tonight for an evening of laughter themed around the NHS, with proceeds going to Young Minds mental health charity. Tickets are £15 (£12 for NHS staff) and booking is required.
