What we're reading

Things to do

POSTER GIRLS: Just a few more days to see this exhibition about 20th and 21st century female graphic designers, and some of the poster they produced, with specific focus on transport posters from this time. 150 posters and artworks are on display, with the story behind some of them told for the first time. London Transport Museum (Covent Garden), included in admission, just turn up, until 13 January

DAUGHTER IN LAW: D.H. Lawrence's play The Daughter In Law comes to the Arcola Theatre in a new, in-the-round staging. Set in Nottinghamshire in 1912, against a backdrop of trouble in the mines, it's the story of a woman who learns a secret about her newly-married son, and how it affects her daughter in law. Arcola Theatre (Dalston), £10-£22, book ahead, 10 January-2 February

PALACE RESTORATION: Wondered what's going on with all the restoration work at Fulham Palace? We went behind the scenes last year, but now there's a chance to meet the man in charge of it all, Site Manager Steve Bevan. He's giving a talk about the work in progress, and answering any questions you may have. Fulham Palace, free, just turn up, 3pm-4pm

GALLERY TOUR: Take a tour of Wellcome Collection's current exhibition Living With Buildings, led by an expert. Rosamund Lily West is a PhD student studying London County Council housing and public art, 1943-1965, at Kingston University. Wellcome Collection (Euston), free, just turn up, 6pm-6.45pm

FABRIC HISTORY: How has fabric changed the world? That's the subject of tonight's event, which covers how certain fabrics have changed the course of history, including the woollen sails of Viking longboats, and the high-tech fibres used to make space suits for astronauts. Fashion & Textile Museum (Bermondsey), £15/£12, book ahead, 6pm-8pm

BIRTH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH: We're all affected by them in some way, so why are we still afraid to talk about birth, marriage and death? Index On Censorship hosts authors Emilie Pine and Xinran, and founder of Bloody Good Period Gabby Edlin, to tackle the taboo of self-censorship. Foyles Charing Cross Road, free, book ahead, 6.30pm-8.30pm

Is David Bowie a god?

DAVID BOWIE: Is David Bowie a god? That's the question being asked at this talk about the life, work and legend of musician — and Londoner — David Bowie. It's one of several Bowie-themed events happening this week. The Old King's Head (Borough), £5/£2.50, booking recommended, 8pm-10pm

SKATE LATES: With just a few days until Somerset House's ice rink closes, the penultimate Skate Late of the season takes place. London-born DJ and musical master Josey Rebelle provides the soundtrack tonight, as you take to the rink for a club night on the ice. Somerset House, £17, book ahead, from 8.30pm

COMEDY SHOW: Comedian Tom Basden — who wrote TV shows Plebs and Gap Year — showcases some of his new comedy material, including stand-up and songs. The Bill Murray (Islington), £6/£8, book ahead, 9.30pm-10.30pm
