Ever wondered how Tower 42 got its name? It's simple, really — the award-winning City skyscraper has 42 floors. And, this March, Shelter challenges you to race up all of them.
That's right, for their flagship fundraising event, the charity, which supports people affected by homelessness and bad housing in England, wants you to climb 932 steps to the top of the tower.
On Thursday 14 March, 1000 runners are expected to take part in Shelter's Vertical Rush, and there's still time to make sure you're one of them. You can climb solo or, if you fancy a bit of moral support, as a team of five.
Because starting times are staggered, there's plenty of room to go at whatever pace is most comfortable for you. It's undoubtedly a physical challenge, but the breathtaking views and the endorphin rush that awaits you at the top are well worth the sore legs. But if that's not enough, you also get a goodie bag, a post-race reception, and your own fetching running shirt to keep.
On average, the challenge takes about 10 minutes to complete. So you can even fit it before or after work — or even in your lunch break, if you catch the noon wave — and amaze (or infuriate) all of your coworkers with your unwavering commitment to productivity.
Most importantly, with every step, you'll be supporting people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. A staggering one in 53 Londoners are homeless, and every 11 minutes a family in Britain loses their home. That's why Shelter is asking solo runners to make a sponsorship pledge of £159 and teams to pledge £799 as a group to help the charity continue their vital work providing expert advice, support, and legal services.
