A brand new exhibition has landed at Japan House London, and it's metal as hell. Biology of Metal: Craftsmanship in Tsubame-Sanjo puts the spotlight on the extraordinary skills of ordinary people from a centuries-old industrial hub within the northern Japanese prefecture of Niigata.
The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Tsubame-Sanjo Factory Festival, and is being launched as part of London Design Festival 2018.
The heroes of Tsubame-Sanjo's famous metal-working factories and workshops have brought a huge variety of wares all the way to London for an exploration of the tradition and innovation behind their craftsmanship.
See beautiful and functional objects created using metalworking techniques passed down through generations of artisans, and gain insight as to how these are being adapted as society continues to evolve.
But that's not all. Throughout September and October, 2018, over 20 artisans from Tsubame-Sanjo host an eclectic range of metal-inspired workshops and talks.
Renowned for their precision and skill, you're in safe hands as you dabble in metal spoon-making and learn how to sharpen Japanese razors and knives. Suffice to say that it's a far cry from DT lessons of your school days.
So if you're up for learning about an exquisite ancient trade (and maybe even making yourself a stunning piece of tableware to take home) visit the Japan House website and start planning your visit.
Biology of Metal: Craftsmanship in Tsubame-Sanjo is now open to the public at Japan House London until 28 October, 2018. The exhibition is completely free, and there's no need to book.
