Frederick Thomas Edridge — five-times Mayor of Croydon — must have attended some uninspiring ribbon cuttings in his time. But the slight widening of a high street? That takes the biscuit.
1896 was clearly a time when councils had cash to throw frivolously at such non-events. Ironically the plaque itself is now something of a niche Croydon tourist attraction (well we're trying to make that the case, anyway).
There's something else: as pointed out to us by Inside Croydon's Steven Downes, the road is no longer 50 feet wide. At some point, it must've been narrowed again, and some numpty forgot to commission a plaque to mark the occasion. You just can't get the staff.
