Show Girls And Shakespeare, Sex And Scandal: Go See Wise Children At The Old Vic

This is a sponsored article on behalf of The Old Vic.

"Let's have all the skeletons out of the closet, today, of all days!"

Described as "A big, bawdy tangle of theatrical joy and heartbreak", Wise Children is the Old Vic's latest play, and it's causing a stir among audiences and critics alike.

Adapted from the novel by the late Angela Carter (The Passion of New Eve, Nights at the Circus), Wise Children is the story of twin chorus girls Nora and Dora Chance. While they celebrate their 75th birthday in Brixton, over the river in Chelsea their father and greatest actor of his generation, Melchior Hazard, turns 100.

So too does his twin brother Peregrine. If he’s still alive, that is. And if, in truth, Melchior is their real father at all…

Wise Children is Emma Rice's first production with her new company, also called Wise Children. Rice is best known for her work with Kneehigh theatre company (Brief Encounter, Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and Shakespeare's Globe (A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romantics Anonymous).

Here, she colourfully captures Carter's 1991 novel, by way of live music, buckets of comedy and a set that'll take your breath away.

Expect show girls and Shakespeare, sex and scandal, music, mischief and mistaken identity.

Wise Children is on at The Old Vic until 10 November 2018. Tickets start at £12.
