Five-Star Comedy From Phil Wang At Soho Theatre Kinabalu, Soho Theatre 5

Chitty, Chitty, Wang, Wang: This is just one way that British-Malaysian comedian Phil Wang refers to himself on stage — and add ‘Kim Jong Phil’ to that list too. Wang effortlessly charms the audience with his likeability, silly wordsmithery and air-tight performance in his latest stand-up show Kinabalu.

Centering around his experience as a Malaysian-born Brit, Wang touches on a range of subjects, from his frustrating childhood to buying his first tube of lube. He also plays on the awkwardness around racial stereotypes, with jokes like ‘My friend Jason, who’s black… that’s not part of the story, but you were all imagining him as a white man’.

Wang’s talent is not a huge surprise; as former president of the Cambridge University Footlights, he’s already becoming a veteran of the comedy panel show circuit. In the intimate setting of the Soho Theatre, Wang’s routine is much bigger than its surroundings. The result? A highly-charged, stitch-inducing show.

Kinabalu, Soho Theatre, 21 Dean Street, London W1D 3NE, 28 November-9 December 2017.
