A South London Supper That's Short Of Scrumptious The Habit Cafe 3

We're frequent visitors to the South London Gallery to check out the latest exhibitions. This time we went to see a performance and decided to catch a bite after at The Habit Cafe, which is housed in the same building.

We've been to the cafe before but only for brunch, which is superb — busy every time we've visited and for good reason.

We kicked off with the salmon and some self-assembly is required.

This time we switched to dinner, to see what the evening menu has to offer.

We kick off with some goats curd with pear, honey and walnuts and the different flavours work well together with no one element overpowering the others. It's hard to go wrong with smoked salmon, but here all the additional ingredients come to one side of the board and we have to construct it ourselves. It's an odd choice as it would have been more natural for it to come seasoned and how do you split a delicious quail egg across five pieces of salmon — we tried and you can't. We're fine when it comes to assembling some flat pack furniture, but in the world of food, self-assembly should remain reserved for fajitas only.

Our polenta was tasty but not memorable.

On to the mains and we go for the polenta and the chicory tart. Both are nice enough, but neither are that memorable.

Desserts are small and sweet enough to finish off the meal but again neither of the two we order wow us, though the trifle has strong zest game.

All the food at The Habit is enjoyable, but there was nothing particularly special. Given how good the breakfast is here, dinner is a tad disappointing.

The Habit at South London Gallery, 67 Peckham Road serves dinner Wednesday to Saturday.
