Instagrammers of London, the news you've all been dying to hear has arrived.
Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Rooms are coming back to London! Two of them in fact, one of which is returning to the gallery after a previous stint here in 2012. It's titled Infinity Mirrored Roomed — Filled with the Brilliance of Life and is one of Kusama's largest installations. The other is Chandelier of Grief, which creates an endless room.
There's also a small presentation of photographs that will help provide historical context for Kusama's work, and explore the phenomenon they've become over time. And boy are they a phenomenon. For the uninitiated, a Kusama exhibition tends to mean queues. And don't expect you'll be able to spend very long in the infinity room. Usually people are shooed through in less than a minute to keep things moving.
Kusama isn't the only big name artist whose work is returning to Tate Modern this year. Louise Bourgeois' giant spider, Maman, is also coming back. So why is Tate playing all the old hits this year? To celebrate the gallery turning 20 — Maman was the very first work visitors met when they stepped through the doors in 2000.
Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Rooms is on at Tate Modern 11 May 2020-9 May 2021. Tickets go on sale 1 March.
