What's This Marble Building At Seven Sisters Station?

This marble tiled unit outside Seven Sisters station has apparently appeared out of nowhere.

In truth, the building's been here for a while — while the tiles were created inside it.

Turner prize winning architecture collective Assemble and artist Matthew Raw collaborated to create a thousand handmade tiles, with the help of local residents — transforming the unit into a permanent artwork, Clay Station.

Says Matthew Raw:

The colourful approach we decided upon came from an extended period of experimentation in the studio. As a result, each tile is a bespoke composition of different clay mixtures. It has been great to work with Assemble and bounce off different skill sets. During production it quickly became apparent that cladding the kiosk with this approach was going to be a labour of love, as each element is rolled and then glazed by hand.

The Clay Station will be leased out to an independent coffee shop. Marble-ous stuff.
