If You Rent In London, You Should Watch This Election Hustings Video

If you rent in London, you're kind of screwed right now. So the people who are running to be Mayor of London should be working on ways to help you.

Sadly, the mayor's hands are tied on a lot of the issues, but there are things he or she could do. Representatives of the five major parties got together last week at Conway Hall to debate rent control, longer tenancies, building more homes and the Housing Bill.

The people you're watching are (from left to right):

  • David Kurten, Assembly candidate for UKIP
  • Joy Morrissey, Assembly candidate for the Conservatives
  • Zack Polanski, Assembly candidate for the Liberal Democrats
  • Jim Waterson, Political Editor at Buzzfeed, chairing
  • Sian Berry, mayoral and Assembly candidate for the Greens
  • Tom Copley, current Assembly Member and candidate for Labour

The debate was organised by Generation Rent, Priced Out and Renters' Rights London.

Rent controls and public housing have been already tried in Sweden. The result? You may have to wait a decade or two decades for your rental apartment.
Map of Stockholm rental apartment waiting times, in years. https://bostad.stockholm.se/st...

"In 2015, it took an average of 10 years to get an apartment in Stockholm through the housing office. For the most desirable apartments may need to have been around 30 years in the queue." Rents in Sweden are not frozen - they rise each year according to negotiations.

If you're not a resident in the UK (be it British citizen, EU citizen, Leave to Remain, whatever), you shouldn't be able to buy residential property here. If anyone has a good rebuttal for this I'd like to hear it.
