Topping a record-breaking year in 2015 with 4.3m passengers, London City Airport recorded its busiest day to date on 24 March, as 17,846 people travelled.

The news comes as a planning public inquiry on the airport's expansion ends today, with airport bosses hoping to overturn a ruling by Boris Johnson blocking its £220m growth plans.

Campaigners say the expansion will create unacceptable increase in noise, while airport officials want to increase its capacity, and be able to manage larger planes.

The proposals, which were approved by Newham Council but overruled by the mayor, include seven new aircraft stands, a parallel taxiway and terminal extensions which would enable up to 6.5 million passengers by 2025.
