A festival dedicated to the humble fried chickpea ball is coming to London on 1 May.

The founder of the festival, Daniel Young, is the creative force behind many successful London food events such as the forthcoming Pizza Festival and Burger Monday.

The calibre fryers at the festival are impressive, including Mustafa Elrefaey of Zööba (flying in from Cairo), Hadi Hazim of the pop-up Fusion Cult (flying in from Beirut), Uri Dinay of the falafel and houmous bar Pilpel (London) and Louai Fares and Rasheed Muhammed of Hoxton Beach (London).

They'll be serving everything from straight-up falafel made with broad beans and chickpeas, to gussied up falafel served with baba ganouj and beetroot-hibiscus tahini. There will also be plenty of drinks in the form of craft beer and cocktails, plus ice cream for afters.

TV chef Rachel Green will be giving demonstrations throughout the day using pulses including British broad beans — it's going to be one big celebration of the bean in what is the official International Year of Pulses.

Tickets are available via Daniel's website for £20 (+ £1.49 booking fee). Ticket price includes taster portions of each of the four falafels, after which you can vote for your favourite. Children under 12 go free.
