A Guide To Summer 2015's Outdoor Film Screenings

This is a sponsored article on behalf of YPlan.

Between getting your Pretty Woman on at Pillow Cinema and pulling that Labyrinth costume out again (good investment) for a rooftop screening, it’s sometimes hard to see the wood for the screens. So, lucky for you, YPlan are here to guide you through the myriad of cinematic madness that is London’s summer al fresco film season.

1. Get on a Roof as the Sun Rises

Outdoor cinema screenings are usually evening affairs, but early birds are being catered to at the Sun-Up Rooftop Cinema Club on 3 July. Flock to Queen of Hoxton to enjoy a film while watching the sun rise over the City of London. You'll be treated to an advance screening of IRIS by the late documentarian Albert Maysles, four weeks before the UK cinematic release date. Held in partnership with The Rooftop Film Club, we think this is going to be popular, so get yourself on the waiting list now.

2. Go for a Wander with Nomads

Big daddies on the outdoor cinema scene, Nomad Cinema are holding six screenings at Grosvenor Square in Mayfair throughout July. Films include The Breakfast Club, Stand By Me and Napoleon Dynamite, and the sound comes through wireless headphone so you don't have to listen to the echoes of popcorn being masticated all around you.

3. Be Taken by Surprise with Pop-Up Screens

If you want a bit of variety, Pop-Up Screens are the ones for you. There are more than 30 separate screenings to choose from, held at eight different locations around the capital including Russell Square, Greenwich, Hammersmith and Clapham. The setting is informal, so pick your chosen spot with friends and remember to bring a cushion or blanket to sit on.

4. Grab Some Grub with a Side of Drama

Oval Space's rooftop terrace is being put to good use with their Film + Food series, which kicks off on 1 July. Classic movies are going to be matched with "great themes and grub" (their words) and starting things off will be The Great Beauty teamed with BBQ Italian sausages, goat's cheese and lentil salad.

5. You Bring the Blanket, They'll Bring the Giant Pillows

If comfort is your priority when it comes to film watching, then Pillow Cinema will have you kicking back and relaxing in no time. Throughout July, giant bean bags will adorn the rooftop of SNAP Studios, overlooking Shoreditch Park, for you to recline while enjoying the show. Share one with a friend or indulge in one all to yourself. It's BYO, so pack snacks, drinks and a cosy blanket for ultimate comfort.

6. Feel Good Classics in Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens

Tuesdays in July see Vauxhall One bring their free pop-up cinema screenings to the historic Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Bring a blanket, rent a deck chair and enjoy an evening out with your friends as dusk falls. Street food stalls will be joining the party, including Grill My Cheese (pretty self-explanatory), Busan BBQ (Korean) and Rotli Crew (Indian).

7. Channel Your Inner Night-Owl with Luna Cinema

London is blessed with some stunning green spaces, and Luna Cinema always make the most of them for their summer evening screenings this July to September. Dulwich Park, Alexandra Palace, Crystal Palace Park, Battersea Park, Hampton Court Palace, Morden Hall Park, Greenwich Park and Kew Gardens (plus some others outside London) are all on the list. Does London get more romantic than watching Romeo + Juliet at Hampton Court Palace?
