Put Some Stride Into Your Spring With Free Guided Walks

Now that we’ve established how awesome a lungful of pollen is, it’s probably time we all escaped the claustrophobic cocoons of public transport and stepped out fully into this gloriously fructifying city. May is National Walking Month and to encourage us to stroll more, TfL is offering a weekend of free guided walks.

There’s a choice of 41 routes spread across the weekend of 30-31 May. Some are gentle leg stretchers while others encourage you to take shanks’ pony for a good hearty gallop. Among those promising a look at the city in bloom, we like the sound of A Mighty River and a Royal Park, the former being the Thames rather obviously, but the latter being the less predictable Bushey Park. Then there’s a walk around London's Best Woodland And Views, one of the few for which booking is required, taking you along the Green Chain route from Belvedere to Severndroog Castle. There’s also the fantastically (if perhaps arrogantly) titled The Finest Walk in London from Wimbledon Park to Richmond.

For those who prefer a bit more urban grit and history, try Secret Diaries and Public Spaces, which explores the legacies of Pepys and Wren. Or there’s the more complete sounding From the Romans to Norman Foster, which winds through bits of the City we all know but charts 2,000 years of history, so hopefully has some nice nuggets.

The Spring Into Summer walks are all free with no booking required for the majority; they will take place on 30-31 May.
