Street Art Festival Scoops Grant

Organisers of Brockley Street Art Festival say they are over the moon after being awarded a £2,500 grant by Lewisham Council's community organisation, Brockley Assembly.

The cash will go towards the costs of paint and equipment such as scaffolding and scissor lifts. Around 20 walls will be covered as part of the 29 May-6 June festival.

"Everyone who's involved in the festival is a volunteer, and every penny counts towards the costs of the event, so we're delighted to get this grant," says Global Street Art CEO Lee Bofkin.

The festival — organised by local residents working in partnership with Londonist, the annual Brockley Max festival and Global Street Art — was launched after winning a public vote. It was nominated by Honor Oak Park resident Ian, who said:

I think the Brockley/Crofton Park/Honor Oak Park/neighbourhoods of Lewisham in south east London would really benefit from some exceptional street art. The community is diverse, independent-minded, and supportive of the local arts scene. Some corners of these neighbourhoods are beginning to thrive due to some great community initiatives but some corners would certainly be improved by inspired mural work. It would certainly be appreciated here more than in some London areas!
