PANCAKE DAY: Yep, today's the day for tossing and noshing, so get your pan oiled and your lemons squeezed. Alternatively, let other people do the work. PAINTING EXHIBITION: Today's the first day of Painting by Julie Caves, a two week pop-up gallery at Hoe Street Central in Walthamstow. View still lifes, abstracts and landscapes in oils and acrylics on canvas, wood panel and paper, all of which are for sale. 17 February-1 March

ANTHONY HOROWITZ: Children's author Anthony Horowitz, the brains behind the Alex Rider Stormbreaker series, is at Southbank Centre's Imagine Children's Festival to talk about his career and books. All children's tickets include a free book. Ages 9-11 and their carers. £12/£8.50, prebook, 3pm

BRUNEL’S WORK: Southwark’s Third Tuesday series brings a talk about the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel to John Harvard Library. Robert Hulse, Director of The Brunel Museum, talks about the life and achievements of the engineer. Free, just turn up, 6.30pm

PEKING MAN: Crap Film Club meets at The Book Club in Shoreditch for a screening of The Mighty Peking Man, a 1977 film which attempted to cash in on the popularity of King Kong. £4.50/£3.50, prebook, 7pm

POP-UP PAINTING: Head to Dissenting Academy in Stoke Newington to have a go at creating your own version of Hockney's Winter's Tunnel. No experience needed and all materials are provided. £25, prebook, 7.30pm
