Didn't have a ticket to see the New Year fireworks? Given that only 100,000 did, many of us found other ways to see our world famous display without either paying a tenner or settling down in front of the telly. We know plenty of people who ignored warnings not to go into central London unless they had a ticket, or lined the river further away from the South Bank. And, judging by the mess one of our number saw on Primrose Hill this morning, lots of people simply headed to a high point. Locals helping the Royal Parks clean-up team told us it's the worst they've seen in 30 years.
Even with officially reduced numbers there were also problems getting home, particularly around Waterloo. The always excellent @SE1 Twitter account found various people being made to walk an hour from Waterloo tube station to the rail station, or being held in The Cut. This isn't new — last year had a similar problem, with various other tube stations along the Jubilee line being closed for overcrowding. Just goes to show that, even with ticketing in place, London's fireworks needs better planning to deal with its popularity.
