SHERLOCK HOLMES: Museum of London's Sherlock Holmes: The Man Who Never Lived And Will Never Die exhibition is now open. It explores why the fictional detective is still so popular with Londoners today, and lets visitors learn more about Victorian London. £12/£10, prebook, until April 2015

HIDDEN GEMS: See some of the best acts from the Edinburgh Fringe in a location closer to home (Brixton to be precise) at Hidden Gems Festival. The eight shows include spoken word from Monkey Poet, stand up from poet Rob Auton and political comedy from Chris Coltrane. £5, prebook, until 23 October

BRITISH LIBRARY: Connected to its current exhibition Terror and Wonder, the British Library shares untold stories of people’s lives found in its archives. Writer Jamie Rhodes hosts an evening of Gothic horror-themed readings from his collection of short tales inspired by the characters found in the library collections. £5/£3, prebook, 6pm

CLIMBING TALK: Emma Twyford, arguably the best British female climber of today, talks about her 20 year climbing career. Takes place at Stamford Street Lecture Theatre in Waterloo. £10, prebook, 7pm

THE MAN JESUS: Simon Callow performs an account of biblical stories including the raising of Lazarus, the wedding at Cana and the journey to Jerusalem. At artsdepot in North Finchley. £16-£25, prebook, 7pm

LOLITICS: Chris Coltrane hosts friendly political comedy night Lolitics at the Black Heart in Camden. Also appearing are Robin Ince, Matthew Crosby, Eleanor Morton, Sarah Bennetto and Kate Smurthwaite. £3, just turn up, 8.30pm

OPERA MEAL: Grub Club hosts a five-course gourmet menu with live opera. Mezzo-soprano Louisa Barry and pianist Merel van der Knoop perform famous Italian, French and English operatic arias and songs. It's a fundraising initiative in support of food waste reduction, aiming to highlight the nutritional value of food that is thrown away across the world. CELLO CONCERT: Wigmore Hall near Oxford Circus is the venue for a concert by cellist Chiara Enderle, youngest ever winner of the prestigious Pierre Fournier Award. Alongside pianist Keiko Tamura, Chiara plays a programme including Beethoven, Poulenc and Schumann. £10-£22, prebook, 7.30pm

COMEDY: The Loft Tickler Free Comedy Night takes place at The Loft in Clapham. Tonight’s acts are Alfie Brown, Mark Cram, Alexis Wieroniey, James Shakeshaft and Tom Holmes. Free, just turn up, 8pm

DARK COMEDY: As part of London Without Limits, a festival which gives people an insight into what it’s like living life in the capital without vision, Comedy In The Dark takes place at The Comedy Store in Leicester Square. DAVID HOCKNEY: Acclaimed writer, photographer and broadcaster Christopher Simon Sykes is at Waterstones King’s Road to talk about the second part of his David Hockney autobiography. £5/£3, prebook, 7pm
