Nearly 60 events, six days, 11 London universities: it's Inside Out Festival. Now in its fifth edition, the festival celebrates the contribution of London universities to the capital's cultural life.

Inside Out proves that as well as supporting knowledge and world-leading research, London universities are also places for sharing culture and entertainment. The programme features a plethora of activities including symposia, screenings, debates and exhibitions. Here are a few highlights that caught our eye:

Debates and Talks

The festival opens with Artists in the Academy, a debate taking place at The British Academy on Monday 20 October, which explores the connection between artists and researchers in contemporary university. There's a special focus on women: Women, Fashion and Power debate discusses whether clothes define a woman's personality on Tuesday 21 October; Women of the World  on Friday 24 October is about the role of women both in past and contemporary society, chaired by Prospect’s Digital Editor Serena Kutchinsky. If fashion is not your thing, listen to Professor Richard Ned Lebow talking about the Psychology of Atrocity on Thursday 23 October. For the art aficionados, try to unravel the Psychology of Art on Wednesday 22 October, go behind the scenes of Acme Studios or Learn All You Ever Wanted to Know about Opera on Thursday 23 October.

Exhibitions

50 Years of Illustration explores the history of this type of visual art from the 1960s to the modern day at a special opening evening on Monday 20 October. From Tuesday 21 October, Sensory Rooms exhibition presents design ideas that could improve the environment for people living with dementia, while CITYTYPE exhibits design works by students from AKTO College and Middlesex University from Thursday 23 October.

Guided Walks

In connection with King's College Cultural Festival, we like the look of the cryptic Underground Medieval London walks happening on Tuesday 21 October. On the same day, there is also a site specific performance at the crypt of St Etheldreda’s church in Ely Place. If you don't like the dark then you can Explore Runnymede instead, the sealing site of the Magna Carta. This tour takes place on Saturday 25 October and you'll be among the first people to test Royal Holloway students' new app, Runnymede Explored. Arty people can also join an art tour and workshop that will teach you How to Interpret London Landmarks, on Wednesday 22 October.

Masterclasses

Stop for 10, 20 or 30 minutes and take part in a Drawing Class with Grace Adam on Monday 20 October. For the inner musician in you, join a Viola Masterclass with Paul Coletti on Wednesday 22 October or Try to Play the Piano with the help of Paul Komen on Thursday 23 October. Want more? Carducci Quartet holds both a string masterclass and a performance on Tuesday 21 October.

Performances

Music lovers will find much to be happy about during the festival. On Tuesday 21 October, cellist Séverine Ballon and pianist Mark Knoop explore the limits of perception and virtuosity with their Rare Earth performance; Trinity Laban Wind Orchestra performs two concertos on Thursday 23 October; The Piatti Quartet holds its lunchtime recital at St Alfege Church on Thursday 23 October and The Ossian Ensemble takes you on a journey of discovery through theatre and music on Saturday 25 October. For dance lovers we suggest the (Un)touched dance performance installation which incorporates polycarbon and light, starting on Thursday 23 October.

Most of the events are free, although some of them need to be booked in advance. Talk about your festival experience on Twitter, use the hashtag #IOFestival2014 and share the knowledge.
