There’s yet another reason to pay ZSL London Zoo a visit this month, with the return of their 2014 animal photography prize exhibition tomorrow.

Professional and amateur photographers have been all around the globe, battling it out to impress the judges (presenter Kate Humble and ornithologist Bill Oddie) and secure a coveted spot within the exhibition. They’ve been through forests, across deserts, under oceans and up mountains to capture the magic of the natural world and, oh boy, the results are something else.

Celebrating the world’s most dynamic new animal photography, the exhibition is held within the zoo itself and allows visitors to get up close and personal with the some of the rarest, most beautiful creatures on our fair planet — after seeing many of the amazing animals themselves.

Previous photos displayed in the annual exhibition have included mysterious manatees in murky waters, tiny ants displaying Herculean feats of strength and a very luminous greedy green gecko. The six categories featured are:

  • The Perfect Moment - Patience is rewarded when you capture that stunning shot
  • Last Chance to See? - Threatened habitats, endangered species and living conservation
  • Weird & Wonderful - Unique species, amazing adaptations and unexpected surprises
  • Size Matters - From the massive to the microscopic, this is the category for the most amazing micrographs to the biggest panoramas… celebrate all creatures great and small
  • The Birds and the Bees - From birds in flight to love at first sight… avian images, incredible invertebrates
  • Deep & Meaningful - Everything aquatic - in, around or under the water

So make the most of this chance to celebrate the sheer variety of wildlife around the world, in the heart of London.

ZSL London Zoo’s Animal Photography Exhibition takes place from Friday 19 September until early 2015, at ZSL London Zoo, Regent’s Park, NW1 4RY. The exhibition is free to enter with a ticket to the zoo (entry prices here). For more information on ZSL London Zoo, visit their website, follow them on Twitter or like them on Facebook.
