Good Cause of the Day

First Story works in schools in deprived areas, with a writer-in-residence working with pupils over an academic year to produce creative writing. The kids get their confidence and literary juices flowing, and you can read the best of the London output in this anthology. They also run events, the next of which is a literary lunch with author Esther Freud at the Polish Club in Kensington on 16 September. Tickets cost £60 and can be booked via Eventbrite.

If you’d like to volunteer at First Story’s Young Writers’ Festival on 25 and 26 September, email anais.belaud@firststory.org.uk. The festival is in Oxford — find out more on the First Story website.
