LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL: London’s celebration of design in all its forms is happening all over the capital. There are plenty of events to choose from, most are free: we’ve selected the top things to do during the festival. You can also browse one of these design-themed exhibitions connected to it. BEER FESTIVALS: Selected from our September Beer Festivals round-up, we suggest Eden Park Beer and Cider Festival and Craft 100 Beer Festival. Both start today, are very cheap and promise plenty of artisanal beer and ciders.

FASHION FESTIVAL: Forest Hill Fashion Week celebrates the borough’s creatively independent spirit and dedication to high street regeneration. There will be catwalk shows, designers on the high streets, workshops, fashion parties and even family events — most of the events are free. Until 21 September

FUTURE DESIGN: Future of Mobility exhibition at Designjunction starts today, as part of The London Design Festival. It features works by six cutting edge young designers, who have been commissioned by MINI to create their own interpretation of the ‘future of mobility’, an intersection where design and technology collide. Expect wearable technology, 3D maps and interactive performances. £10/£8, until 21 September

DISCOVER RICHMOND: Explore the boroughs of Richmond and Kingston upon Thames, join Discovery Richmond for a guided walk and a boat trip along the Thames. During the journey you'll see the remains of an old royal palace and an ancient market town — the event is part of Totally Thames festival. £20/£18, prebook, 12pm-4.30pm

GUIDED WALK: Explore a lost London river as you follow the footsteps of the poet John Keats on a literary walk along the Thames’s most famous tributary — the Fleet. Meeting point is the City Information Centre, opposite St Paul’s Cathedral. £8+bf, prebook, 12.30pm

GUILDHALL LIBRARY: The Bank of England Museum's curator is at the historical library to talk about the effects of the First World War on the Bank of England and its staff. The ticket includes a wine reception after the talk. £5+bf, prebook, 6pm

ARTIST TALK: Shoreditch-based Howard Griffin Gallery opens its doors to the public and hosts homeless artist John Dolan for a Q&A session to mark the end of its exhibition John & George — which we reviewed. Free, just turn up, 7pm

MUSIC AND WORDS: Head to The Harrison Pub in King's Cross for a night of creativity and inspiration featuring poetry, music, stories and mingling. £5+bf, prebook, 7pm

JAZZ PARTY: Cafe 1001 in Brick Lane hosts an evening inspired by the 1920s. There will be themed cocktails, street food and a music revival of the jazz era. £10/£8+bf,prebook, from 7pm

Good Cause of the Day

Join the 10km Mouth Cancer Walk happening in Hyde Park on Saturday 20 September. This is a free walk which aims to raise awareness of the symptoms of mouth cancer: you can register online and join the walk on the day. Walk starts at 2pm, it's suggested to be there around 1pm.
