Author, Poets And Comedians Head For Wimbledon

Wimbledon BookFest has done it again and pulled in a bunch of big names to this corner of south west London, for more than a week of fun and informative literary treats.

It's got Alexander McCall Smith, Colm Toibin and Victoria Hislop talking fiction, David Starkey (who the website refers to as Dave; we find this hilarious) and Tracy Borman bringing their personal perspectives to the Tudor period, the magnificent Michael Rosen exploring poetry and protest, plus Paul Merton and Clare Balding discussing their biographies (tickets to these two talks might be £20, but they include a copy of the books).

There's stuff for kids, and even if you don't tend towards the literary there's still plenty to tickle your fancy: film screenings, comedy from Francesca Martinez, Jeremy Hardy and Josh Widdicombe, and even John Inverdale hosting a sports night with Brian Moore and Olympic rower Katherine Grainger.

BookFest is run by and for the community, and any money raised goes right back into next year's festival. Some events are already sold out, so snap up anything that sparks your interest.

Wimbledon BookFest runs 3-12 October in various venues around Wimbledon, including two tents on the Common. Tickets from £7.50.
