You are invited to spend an afternoon watching celebrities play cricket for charity at what is said to be the oldest sports pitch in London.

On Monday 8 September The Sick Children's Trust cricket team will field former England cricketers John Emburey, Alex Tudor and Min Pat plus Strictly stars Mark Ramprakash and actor Colin Salmon — he of Bond films, Resident Evil, Prime Suspect and most recently 24. Looks like he's a nifty bowler to boot.

The opposition, the Authors Cricket Club, originally played in the early 20th century for authors and writers with a passion for cricket and counted PG Wodehouse and Arthur Conan Doyle as members. The club was revived in 2012 and its modern team stars Sebastian Faulks, who spent childhood summers playing cricket for eight hours a day, and former New Zealand player and cricket writer Ian O'Brien. The team is captained by literary agent Charlie Campbell.

Not only can you expect fast bowling, big catches, tumbling wickets and a civilised break for tea, it takes place in the garden of the Honourable Artillery Company, which sits behind a stone fortress on City Road near Old Street. Cricket has been played on the Artillery Garden since at least 1725 and it was also the site of the first hot air balloon ascent.

If you're making a day of it, nearby pub Artillery Arms is in our database of best pubs in London and we recommend you go there for a post-match pint.

All Out for Cricket in the City is on Monday 8 September at the Honourable Artillery Company, City Road from 2pm-6.30pm. Adult tickets £10, under 16s £5. There are also hospitality packages from £60 to £200 and the opportunity to have a fancy pants dinner with the stars and — er — Jeffrey Archer.
