Saluting The Windmill For Supporting Local Talent

The Windmill, Brixton

The Windmill in Brixton does a quite magnificent line in all-day rock music events with a cheeky barbecue attached for good measure. Next month they're ramping it up again with an event scarily tagged Summer Weird Sin, complete with a Hammer Horror-style font on the flyer.

From 4pm until rock o'clock (i.e. 'late') on Saturday 16 August you can treat yourself to a parade of eight outlandish, often rockabilly and occasionally gothic bands. No fewer than seven of the bands are from London, and The Windmill should therefore be applauded thoroughly for supporting the local music scene.

One of the highlights on the bill is Western-inspired psychedlic quartet Saint Agnes, whose accurately-titled single Old Bone Rattle has recently received high praise from the musically-knowledgeable. The Dying Shames, meanwhile, will dish out a sixties rock'n'roll sound with a splash of surf rock thrown in — most concisely demonstrated in their nod to sad times on a specific street in N4 (maybe), Blackstock Blues.

Of special note are Role Models, who donate the profits of their song This Eventually Leads Nowhere to a charity close to their hearts - Haringey Autism, a branch of the National Autistic Society. Happily the song's a real winner, and you can check it out yourself below.

The other London bands on the Windmill bill are THE WiDOWS, DOLLS and HOTGOTHIC, with just one lower-case letter between them proving how much they ROCK. Completing the set are the impressively named Dedwardians.

And the headliners? Bad For Lazarus, of...Brighton. Oh.

Still, they're very good too, and overall this is a marvellous event for anyone inclined to wear shades indoors over a hell of a lot of eyeliner, because rock'n'roll abides.

And hats off to The Windmill for providing a welcome platform for a few lesser-known London bands. Londonist is a fervent supporter of our city comrades taking up arms, or instruments at any rate, and any venue that sticks seven on the same bill deserves a stiff salute.

Summer Weird Sin takes place at The Windmill, Brixton, on 16 August. Tickets priced £7 (plus 70p booking fee) are available from We Got Tickets.
