Markets And Shopping Events: August 2014

It’s easy to get caught up in the large shopping centres and accessible chain stores that London has to offer. But look a little further and there are plenty of one-off shopping events too. We’ve rounded up the best pop-up shops, markets and fairs that are happening in London this month. Just hone in on whichever section tickles your fancy below, and browse by date.

Pop-Up Shops

Cocorose London

SOUVENIRS: Fed up of the samey London souvenir shops dotted around the West End? Souvenir is a pop-up souvenir shop and showcase in Clerkenwell. Curated by Charlene Lam of Creative Clerkenwell, expect to find products inspired by the city and made in the UK. 5-10 August

TARA STARLET: Love the Rockabilly look? Tara Starlet, a pop-up shop in Carnaby is the place for you. The family-run business offers 1950s glamour, with all items made in London. 24 July-17 August

COCOROSE LONDON: The international footwear brand has a pop-up shop in Covent Garden for the duration of the summer. Spot the store in Shelton Street by the colourful origami hanging in the window. 16 June-1 September

Markets and Events

Adams Antiques Fair is back on 24 August

SUMMER SATURDAY: The final Queens Parade Summer Saturday takes place at the abandoned local corner in Willesden Green. Local art and craftspeople set up shop, letting the public browse accompanied by live music and performances. Free, 11am-6pm, 2 August

WIMBLEDON PIAZZA: Wimbledon Weekend Market takes place on The Piazza with 20 stalls selling gifts, accessories, books, children’s toys, homewares and more, as well as hot and cold food. 11am-6pm, 2-3 August

SUMMER NIGHTS: The ever-popular Camden Lock Night Market is back. The main focus is international street food, accompanied by live music, film screenings and late night shopping. Every Thursday 7 August-4 September

SEVEN DIALS: The shopping area in Covent Garden hosts Spotlight, a summer festival consisting of stage performances, a solar cinema and a literary salon. Shopping happenings include discounts in stores such as Pepe Jeans and Fred Perry, a pop-up Karine Jackson salon and shoe customisation at Superga. Free, 12pm-7pm, 16 August

RECORD FAIR: Dig A Little Record Fair heads to a new location this month. Eltham GPO hosts the daytime meet up for anyone interested in music. As well as specialist sellers being on hand with records to sell and trade, there will be DJs providing the music. Free, 12pm-6pm, 16 August

FLEA MARKET: Abney Hall in Stoke Newington will be brimming with bargains as Hackney Flea Market returns. Local businesses and people will be selling second hand items, from couture fashion to rediscovered treasures, encompassing fashion, furniture, records and collectables, antique luggage, electrical goods... Free, 11am-6pm, 16-17 August

ANTIQUES: The monthly Adams Antiques Fair is back at The Royal Horticultural Hall in Victoria, with over 140 exhibitors selling antiques, jewellery, silver, pictures and textiles. £4, 10am-4.30pm, 24 August

Vintage Fairs

There's something for all tastes at So Vintage London on 2 August

SUMMER FASHION: We're hoping the sunny weather hangs around until early August because we're promised some bargainous (what do you mean that's not a word?) summer vintage fashions at So Vintage in Old Spitafields Market. If you're staycationing this year (how retro!), homeware and furniture are also on sale. Those in the know can whisper 'So Vintage Sale' to stallholders for an extra discount. Free, 11am-5pm, 2 August

JUMBLE & PEARLS: The Book Club in Shoreditch, home of many quirky events, hosts the penultimate Jumble & Pearls Vintage Fayre, combining art, design and fashion. New designers exhibit their work and artists sell their latest pieces. Free, 12pm-6pm, 2 August

VINTAGE KILO: 10 tonnes of vintage clobber from the 1970s-1990s come to Bethnal Green for Judy's Vintage Kilo Sale. The premise is simple; get a kilogram of vintage items (usually 4-5 items, depending how savvy you are) for £15. £3/£1, 11am-4pm, 3 August

VINTAGE TREASURES: Pop up Vintage does its thing at Old Spitalfields Market. 40 vintage traders from across the UK come to East London with their vintage offerings including ladies and menswear, jewellery and accessories, retro homeware, vintage prints, posters, collectables and curios. Free, 11am-5pm, 16 August

MID CENTURY: Bettina Scarlett's Mid Century Market returns to Hammersmith with a strong focus on all things 50s. Stallholders are experts in the era, selling items such as true vintage clothing and unique handmade jewellery. £3, 10.30am-4pm, 16 August

Art and Craft

Meet the craftspeople at Designers/Makers

PAINTINGS AND PORTRAITS: The monthly Spitalfields Art Market offers affordable art available to buy directly from the artists themselves. The focus is mainly on painting and photography but there's also pop-art style perspex art and more. 31 July-3 August

DESIGNER MAKERS: Meet the people behind the products at Designers/Makers Market at Old Spitalfields. Craftspeople come from all over the UK to sell their products. 11am-5pm, 16 August

ARTS FAIR: Those clever people behind Hackney Flea Market are turning their hands to the creative, as the first Arts Fair comes to Abney Hall in Stoke Newington. Over 60 independent creative businesses will be present, from textiles experts and ceramicists to small publishers. 11am-6pm, 30-31 August
