In 2016, the Design Museum will pack its bags and move from Shad Thames to Kensington. Its new home will be the old Commonwealth Institute, a much-loved 1960's building with — and here's your phrase of the day — a distinctive hyperbolic paraboloid roof.

Before the Museum can move in, the Grade 2* listed building must undergo a complex overhaul under the auspices of architect John Pawson, one that satisfies both the heritage lobby and the needs of a 21st century museum. The pictures above show the progress to date.

In related news, the Design Museum this month celebrates its 25th anniversary at its current home on Shad Thames. An all-day birthday party on Saturday 5 July (10am-5.30pm) includes a riverside BBQ, bar, family activities and a celebration of memories of two and a half decades of design excellence. Visitors can also see the Designs of the Year and Daniel Weil exhibitions for £8.80.
