Explore The House Of St Barnabas: Art Social '14
The House of St Barnabas is a private members club with a charitable aim, to help London's homeless back into work. Its mission to bring people closer together through art and ideas will be brought to life by a four-day festival, Art Social '14.
Three visual and sonic installations, created by London based-contemporary artists working with other practitioners, will be on display throughout the Grade I listed Georgian house. Musician Tony Nwachukwu and artist Barby Asante explore the ideas and ideals that attract people to a 'hopeful' city like London, in an audio-visual project filmed in the chapel and installed in the garden room. Patrick Murphy’s Flock installation lands in Greek Street accompanied by a Keaton Henson soundscape while Margot Bowman creates a new, interactive work collaborating with electronic musicians and producers Actress and Giganta.
The four-day programme is packed with artists' talks, workshops, music events and family activities — with most of them taking place inside St Barnabas chapel. Highlights include:
- Gavin Turk in Conversation with Richard Strange: the old friends chat about art on Thursday 31 July, 6.30pm
- Architecture and the City: a panel exploring the sound of London and how music is part of its DNA on Friday 1 August, 3.30pm
The Art Social Late Night curated by musician Tony Nwachukwu, with music and DJ sets in the Garden Room on Friday 1 August, 8.30pm
- The Voice: interactive workshop lead by artist and musician Gaynor O'Flynn, mixing vocal practices with philosophical teaching, meditation and relaxation on Saturday 2 August, 10.30am
- Family Fun Day: it's Open House on Sunday 3 August from the noon with the Art Social '14 Fun Day featuring workshops, live performances and a tea party plus explore the House of St Barnabas and experience the installations.
The House of St Barnabas is usually members only so this is a great opportunity to enjoy the interior of this fine Georgian town house, its beautiful chapel, and garden. Just check the website carefully for details of free access to the art exhibition and details of booking for individual events.
