Opera Stars Gather For George Harewood At ENO

© Grant Smith 2004Opera lovers can look forward to a night of special performances at the Coliseum in honour of the life of George Harewood, the chairman who oversaw a golden period in the history of the English National Opera.

The gala evening – Call Me George – will include a variety of music including blues, sitar and the best bits from operas by Mozart, Verdi, Wagner and others. There will be performances by stars such as Lesley Garrett, Christopher Purves and Sir John Tomlinson as well as the participation of three of the UK’s most celebrated conductors: Sir Mark Elder, Paul Daniel and Edward Gardner.

The musical programme devised by director David Pountney will reflect the diverse passions and interests of Harewood, a cousin of the Queen and one-time president of Leeds United as well as an opera aficionado and confidant of Maria Callas. Proceeds from the evening will go to ENO’s Harewood Artists programme, an initiative to support UK-trained singers.

Call Me George - A celebration of the life of George Harewood takes place on 24 June 2014 at the London Coliseum. Tickets £50. ENO Box Office: 020 7845 9300.
