Roll up your sleeves, get ready to get mucky: volunteers of all ages are needed for the South East London 3 Rivers Clean-Up.

This annual festival of river activities sees the rivers Ravensbourne, Pool and Quaggy which flow though the boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich, Croydon and Bromley, get some much needed attention from hundreds of local volunteers under the guidance of Thames21.

As well as removing rubbish that's been thoughtlessly dumped or washed into the waterways there's a focus on removing non-native plant species along the river, such as Himalayan Balsam, which pose a threat to native wildlife and biodiversity. The programme includes some nature walks and talks too.

It's free to get involved in a clean-up, and good mucky, watery fun for all the family. Equipment is provided, just wear old clothes you don't mind getting dirty. It's a great opportunity to meet new people, get involved in your community, learn about your local river and help protect it.

Events are taking place from Saturday 21 June to Saturday 12 July, with a people's party on the final Friday to celebrate and thank the volunteers.

Check out the events calendar here and follow @3RCU for updates. Some events require booking so please check the calendar carefully.
