East End Film Festival Returns

Gala event from a previous festival.

Major stars and promising newcomers are out in force over the next fortnight at the East End Film Festival.

In the opening event, Ron Perlman of Hellboy fame will be joined by director Ross Clarke for a screening of Dermaphobia, followed by a Q&A (13 June).

Another highlight sees former drug baron Howard Marks run a Q&A at the screening of short biopic Howard Marks and the Lance of Destiny (24 June).

The vast programme includes over 70 other screenings, from full length feature films to short documentaries. The emphasis is on first- or second-time directors, with awards for best in class. In addition, this year's line-up includes a prominent strand of Mexican film-making.

One of the strengths of the EEFF is its blurring of artistic boundaries. While film buffs will find plenty of one-off screenings, many events include contributions from beyond the silver screen. To give three examples... You'll find The Levellers playing an acoustic gig following a short film about their work. Over in East Village (the former Athletes' Village), World Cup matches are interspersed with videos from around the world. A screening of One Rogue Reporter is punctuated with stand-up comedy from Kevin Eldon and Simon Munnery. The venues range from an art deco cinema to parks and galleries to a rediscovered Masonic temple in Liverpool Street.

You'll find the complete programme over on the EEFF website.

The East End Film Festival runs 13-25 June at various venues across east London. Ticket prices vary, but most events should be pre-booked.
