The Unit London has opened with an exhibition exploring the Seven Deadly Sins — a sin for each of the Seven Dials where the gallery has set up home. The exhibition aims to uncover the darkest vices of humanity, with the gallery calling upon an international roster of artists to dive into the indulgent world of vice.
It’s a brave project, where car bonnets lambasting American foreign policy sit alongside optical illusion canvases and warped fetishised skull sculptures. At points this mix of styles, artists and themes appears disparate yet, like the sins they explore, many of the works exhibited have a seductive toxicity — and the curators succeed in concocting an exhibition which demands your attention.
The real test for any gallery is longevity, but with people queuing out of the door on opening night and an impressive collective at its disposal, the Unit London’s Covent Garden venture has started impressively.
The Seven Deadly Sins is on at The Unit London, 7 Earlham Street WC2H 9LL, until 15 May.
