For many wildlife fanatics, the Wildife Photographer of the Year exhibition at Natural History Museum is the pinnacle of the art calendar. That packed up in March and won't be returning until the next exhibition opens in October, but plenty of other wildlife art exhibitions are coming to London over the coming months.
Focus On The Wild
Renowned wildlife photographer Roger Hooper exhibits some of his latest work at Focus On The Wild, a free exhibition at the Oxo Tower Gallery, which also launches his new book of the same title. All profits will be donated to Hoopers Africa Trust and WWF. Hooper is also exhibiting a piece of work at Thrive (details below).
Free, Oxo Tower Gallery, 13 June-6 July
Spotlight on Sumatra
Sumatra has become known recently as the ever-shrinking habitat of the critically endangered Sumatran tiger, but it's home to plenty of other (equally endangered) wildlife too.
The Spotlight On Sumatra Exhibition is organised by the Sumatran Orangutan Society, portraying the vast range of wildlife that lives in Sumatra, and the danger it faces. The exhibition is outside More London Riverside, next to City Hall. Best of all, it's open 24 hours, giving people a chance to see the art in different lights, so if you find yourself at a loose end at 2am, you know where to head.
On 14 May enjoy a free lunchtime walk through the exhibition, led by vet Dr Ricko Jayo who works with orang-utans in Sumatra. No need to book, just turn up at 2.30pm. A panel debate on 20 May at London Zoo coincides with the exhibition. Speakers discuss how to save the the wildlife of Sumatra. Tickets are £10 and should be pre-booked.
Free, More London Riverside, 1-31 May
Wildlife Artist of the Year 2014
The David Shepherd Foundation's Wildlife Artist of the Year is now in its sixth year. Shortlisted works will be available to view and buy at Mall Galleries for just five days in June, exhibited alongside work by David Shepherd and selected guest artists. All sales go towards raising funds and awareness for endangered wildlife. The David Shepherd Foundation works on a small number of carefully selected wildlife projects in Africa. See last year's winning artworks here.
Free, Mall Galleries, 3-7 June
THRIVE
Thrive is organised by Save Wild Tigers, an organisation dedicated to doing just that. The exhibition brings together several artists, all of whom have created a work of art inspired by tigers. The centrepiece of the exhibition is Lauren Baker's The Crystal Tiger, a life-size tiger head sculpture encrusted with 45,000 Swarovski crystals. Other artists taking part include artisan globe maker Peter Bellerby (image above), renowned wildlife artist Chris Wright and London-based artist Mark Powell.
Sanderson Hotel, 14-19 May
