History, Family Fun And Even Fitness At Hither Green Festival

Have you ever been to Hither Green? If you haven't, the upcoming Hither Green Festival is a good excuse to visit. Just hop on a train from Charing Cross and after a 20 minute journey you can enjoy the local festival, which will animate the area for over a week.

Hither Green Festival celebration last year

Starting on Saturday 17 May and running for nine days until Sunday 25 May, Hither Green Festival is in its sixth edition and promises to bring even more creative and fun events this year. There's something for everyone: families, gardening lovers, music passionates and even fitness maniacs.

The Festival kicks off on Saturday with the Food Arts and Craft Fayre, happening in the picturesque setting of the Clock Tower Piazza, from noon until 5pm. On the first day there will also be a baking competition for children, the Hither Green Bake Off.

Most of the events are free or relatively cheap, with a lot of fun activities aimed at connecting and enriching the community. The choice is vast and we picked up some of the most exciting: on Sunday 18 May the Community Garden hosts a Seed & Plant Swap (free, just turn up, 11am) and there is free entrance to many local gardens with Open Gardens Sunday — just grab your map at selected points and explore the local area. History passionates can mingle with like minds on Tuesday 20 May when a free screening about the story of Hither Green will be followed by a Caribbean Feast at St Swithun’s Church (£5, just turn up, 8pm). There's also something for fitness fans: on Saturday 24 May there will be a free Basscycle Spin Class (free, prebook by email, 1pm).

The festival offers a rich mix of children's and family activities as well: fun is certain on Sunday 18 May at a Children’s Teddy Bears Picnic at St Swithun’s Church Hall and Garden (£5, just turn up, 2pm) and at the free poetry and storytelling evening before bedtime for under 5s happening at Torridon Road library on 20 and 22 May.

You can find many more events on the Hither Green Festival website: make sure you get your tickets from some of the local selected venues (see below).

Hither Green Festival runs from Saturday 17 May until Sunday 25 May, taking place in different venues across the area. Tickets can be purchased either at The Cafe of Good Hope, 216 Hither Green Lane, London SE13 6RT or at You Don’t Bring Me Flowers, 15 Staplehurst Road, London SE13 5ND.
