Following the splendid success of the Spitalfields Winter Festival back in December, east London will be hoping for a sunny spell to brighten up the summer variant of their music and arts festival next month.

The list of events is an exercise in creativity in itself, with a huge variation in musical performances across multiple genres. To open things up, from 4 June there will be a return of the much-loved Folk in a Box experience, where an audience of one is played to by a musician in what must count as the smallest concert venue in the country. It resembles a public convenience, so be careful not to get carried away in there.

The first regular performance is on 6 June at Rich Mix, and is aimed at infants. Musical Rumpus: The Mountain Shakers will be performed by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and aims to open babies' senses up through a story involving giants and mountains. The same orchestra later that day will perform a rather more grown-up show at Christ Church Spitalfields.

There are plenty of potential highlights at the festival, which carries on until 21 June. Students from Phoenix School and THAMES will perform in 'an evening of musical flashes and bangs' at St Leonard's Church on 9 June, while a cacophony of jazz classics, punk anthems and lyrical folk ballads will accost an audience at the same venue on 11 June, performed by Women Sing East under the banner Brazen Hussies.

An irreverent celebration of death, entitled Death Actually, takes place over two nights (20-21 June) at Toynbee Studios, including a bit of Schubert and Bach for classical fans. One definitely not to be missed is a perfomance by Seavaigers, principally folk instrumentalists Chris Stout and Catriona McKay, at Village Underground on 18 June. Their contemporary works inspired by the Scottish landscape and how they put their performance together are explained in the video below, and it looks like it should be quite a show.

Full details of the line-up, and tickets, are available from the festival website, though many events are free.

Spitalfields Music Summer Festival 2014 runs from 6-21 June.
