Tom Du Croz from LondonGigGuide selects five free gigs around town this week.
Tuesday 27 May
Max Jury, Servant Jazz Quarters, Dalston
Free gig. This guy is from the same little town in Iowa as Slipknot, but that is all they have in common. Max was determined to make a career in music despite dropping out of a music degree at Berklee twice. He is now doing just that and considers Hank Williams, Tom Waits and Tammy Wynette as his major influences. @jaxmury, @ServantJazz
July Talk, Old Blue Last, Shoreditch
I would happily hack off body parts to be able to sing like this guy. The band contrast his gravel laden vocals with her more youthful, innocent voice. Listen to the talented duo at the Old Blue Last tonight. @julytalk, @theoldbluelast
Wednesday 28 May
Lotte Mullan, Strongroom Bar, Old Street
Lotte Mullan performs tonight — this track features the fantastic line ‘You know I really liked your mum, I just didn’t like her son’. From the EP Claw Marks which is out on 26 May. @LotteMullan, @StrongroomBar
Thursday 29 May
H. Grimace, The Waiting Room, Stoke Newington
This band are a post Grunge three-piece from Hackney and the track is from a four-track EP also called H. Grimace, which was released on 15 March. @H_Grimace, @WaitingRoomN16
Saturday 31 May
Super Luckies, The Elgin, Ladbroke Grove
Free gig. This track is an ode to natural beauty, and a bit of rant against plastic surgery. The band have been performing at the Elgin for a while now as part of a regular residency. @TheSuperLuckies, @TheElginW11
