The Thames Festival Trust today announced a month-long celebration of the River Thames in September, bringing together a raft of great riverine happenings under the umbrella of Totally Thames.

Things to look forward to include the free, fun and original events and art commissions of the Mayor’s Thames Festival, the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival, the Great River Race, the Big Thames Tidy and The Shimmy in Wandsworth. The river will be lit up for one night only at Hampton Court Palace with Handel’s Fireworks, Music and Illuminations and stuff will be happening the length of the Thames, notably at Richmond, Kew, Brentford, Hammersmith, Imperial Wharf, Wandsworth, Vauxhall, South Bank, More London, St Katharine Docks and the Isle of Dogs.

Activities span tons of interests, from archaeology to maps, conservation to free film, singing to walking, lost rivers, classic boats, literature, architecture, art and more. We’ll be involved too — watch this space.

As last year, the Source to Sea Relay will provide a quirky focus for celebrations and involve loads of people who live, work and play along the river carrying a bottle of Thames water from the source in Gloucestershire 200 miles to London and out to sea, via the Thames Estuary.

Totally Thames runs throughout September. Find out what’s on here and for updates, follow Thames Festival on Facebook and @ThamesFestival #TotallyThames on Twitter.
