Museums At Night: London Museums Open Late

Goodbye Piccadilly at London Transport Museum

London's nightlife gets cultural in May, as Culture24's Museums At Night sees hundreds of museums and galleries stay open late for one-off events, giving visitors a chance to see their exhibits from a different perspective.

It all takes place between 15-17 May. We've highlighted some of the events happening in London, but there are many more events across the UK.

Museum of London

Londonist will be at the Museum of London's Digital City late on Thursday 15 May. The evening offers a digital perspective of the capital, and we'll be helping visitors creatively map their journeys to the museum onto an old-school paper map. Come and say hi! £7/£5, prebook.

London Transport Museum

On Friday 16 May, London Transport Museum's Friday Late celebrates the opening of new exhibition Goodbye Piccadilly, which portrays London during the First World War. The evening includes music, talks and tours, make-and-take sessions, a quiz and a bar. £10/£8, prebook.

Dr Johnson's House

Dr Johnson's House on Gough Square can be seen on a candlelight tour on 16 May. The tour covers aspects of Dr Johnson's domestic life — troublesome housemates are not such a modern issue as Londoners may think. £10/£8, prebook.

The Horniman Museum

Find out what the walrus does at night at Horniman Museum's Extreme Late on Thursday 15 May, with Zimbabwean music, deep sea film screenings, storytelling and more. £5, prebook.

Cartoon Museum

The Cartoon Museum holds two family friendly lates. On 15 May, ex-Spitting Image puppet maker Scott Brooker shares tips for making TV puppets (prebook). The following day, the museum hosts a Punch and Judy puppet show evening, with three shows throughout the night.

Bank of England Museum

The recently reopened Bank of England Museum opens late on Friday 16 May, giving visitors a chance to handle a real gold bar, learn about spotting fake banknotes, and explore the museum's exhibits. Free, just turn up.

Culture24's Museums at Night takes place between Thursday 15 to Saturday 17 May 2014. At time of writing, events at The Supreme Court, the RAF Museum, and on The Golden Hinde have sold out, and we suspect others won't be far behind, so book now.
