Rooftop dining at Coppa

Welcome to our weekly round-up of all that’s happening in London’s food and drink scene.

Inside this week: night markets, roof terraces and burgers

Night market #1: Brixton

Friday and Saturday will see a new monthly market hit Windrush Square. Brixton Night Market, as it’s imaginatively called, will bring together street food traders for the two nights, but you might not have heard of that many of them. This market’s USP in a city full of street food events is that it encourages new traders, rather than reverting to the same stalls found at markets elsewhere. Traders this weekend include a tapas van, pulled pork, Brazilian food, noodles and more. The market runs 5-11pm.

Night market #2: Lewisham

Not content with having one of London’s best daytime markets in the form of Brockley Market, lucky Lewisham is to gain a night market from the team behind Street Feast. As reported on the excellent Brockley Central blog, #ModelMarket will feature street food favourites Breddos, Rola Wala, Smokestak and Yum Bun alongside five different bars (cocktails, shandy, rum, wine and slushy). There’s also promise of a rooftop suntrap.

Coppa bit of the sun

Hackney’s rooftop restaurant Coppa was a big success last summer, and the pop-up run by the folk behind Lardo restaurant has announced that it will return for another run next month. A southern Italian menu will include a wide selection of antipasti alongside barbecued meat and icy granita cocktails. It launches on the Hothouse rooftop near London Fields on 24 May and runs throughout the summer.

Another suntrap is set to open south of the river, as Honky Tonk brings ‘a taste of The Hamptons’ to Clapham. The Sundowner Terrace opens on 15 May at the venue near Clapham Common offering cocktails, booze-laced milkshakes and a selection of hot dogs that circulate in a specially designed cart.

Rotisserie chefs

A new series of Monday night events at Islington rotisserie restaurant Le Coq will see guest chefs take the reins and cook whatever they want. It kicks off on Monday with Ben Tish of the Salt Yard Group (Ember Yard et al.) who’ll be cooking a four-course Iberico pork feast that kicks off with grilled heart and onions on flatbread. Tickets including all food are £40 a head and bookings are still being taken. Keep an eye on the restaurant’s twitter feed for details of future weeks, which include chefs from Climpson’s Arch and Coppa mentioned above.

New openings

Burger stars Patty & Bun opened its second branch at Liverpool Street this week, while Honest Burgers opened its sixth site near Oxford Circus. The fast-growing chain has also announced plans for a seventh site in Tooting later this year. Bonnie Gull Seafood Café launched this week, bringing crabs, fish & chips and other fresh seafood to Exmouth Market while Japanese gastropub Kurobuta opened near Marble Arch. And down south, there’s been a bit of attention for recent opening Rustico in Stockwell, a restaurant specialising in pizzas as well as other Italian cooking.
