East Meets West In Great London Bun Fight

St George Bun fight

On Bank Holiday Monday, two great London institutions square up to each other in a literal bunfight. Organised by the Greater London Authority, the Great London Bun Fight sees two culinary siblings pitted against each other for the title of London's Best Bun.

The Chelsea Bun, the more experienced of the two opponents, having been around since 1700, takes on its lesser-known rival the Hackney Bun. Created in 1850, the Hackney Bun disappeared from the table for a while until its recent revival by The Proud Archivist in Haggerston.

How will the Yeast from the East stand up to the Zest from the West? Will the Truck from the Tuck Shop KO the Rover from Grosvenor? While the Chelsea Bun has history and regality behind it, we've had a tip-off that Hackney's offerings have a secret ingredient.

So which is your best bun? Your favourite fruitcake? Your...OK, we're out of bun puns, but you can vote for whichever one you want to win by hopping over to Twitter and replying to this tweet with 'Hackney' or 'Chelsea'.

The bun that receives the most Twitter votes (now, there's a sentence we never thought we'd type) will be made in the Cook's Corner demo area at the Feast of St George in Trafalgar Square.

The Feast of St George takes place in Trafalgar Square 12pm-6pm on Bank Holiday Monday, with free activities for people of all ages. Have a go at making your own Chelsea or Hackney buns using the recipes linked on this page.
