The Serpentine Galleries has announced the designer of its summer pavilion: Chilean architect Smiljan Radic. The pavilion will open in Kensington Gardens on 26 June 2014, and will house a cafe and a packed programme of events.

Radic's fibreglass structure resembles a beached jellyfish, an inflated Stonehenge, or a fungal protuberance, depending on how much sugar you had for lunch. "I like fragile constructions that have nothing to do with the history of architecture", he tells the Guardian. "...like road-side fruit stalls, travelling circus tents and the simple shelters people build for themselves with whatever materials are to hand."

Each year, the gallery erects a temporary event space next to its permanent buildings. The architect changes each time, but is always someone without previous significant commissions in Britain. Pavilion architects have included such luminaries as Zaha Hadid, Oscar Niemeyer, Daniel Libeskind and Frank Gehry.

More details of Radic's design can be found on Artlyst.
