New London Music: Wild Sun

Wild Sun

January's profile of London duo July Child included a cheeky hint at a future target — north London 'tropical rock' unit Wild Sun.

Wild Sun are based in Barnet where the band's members each went to school, playing in various bands along the way. Having gone their separate ways for university, the pull of north London was obviously too strong, and once back in Barnet's warm embrace they decided to start playing music together.

The quartet of Milo Craig, Jamie Purdie, Callum Finn and Charlie Wright have already sold out two headline shows at the Barfly in Camden and were featured on the BBC's Introducing strand. Not a bad start for a band who only began properly writing together at the beginning of last year.

One of the band's strongest tracks is PS, a harmony-laden delight that evokes images of Vampire Weekend being beaten around a Caribbean beach by a group of young cricketers using guitars for bats. You can watch the video for PS below.

Having supported July Child at the Borderline last month Wild Sun will return for their biggest show to date at the same venue in July, but before then they play the Old Queens Head in Islington on 27 April, plus a handful of shows elsewhere in the UK. Their current focus, however, is on writing — they're working with a producer on their debut album and hope to put out a couple of singles when they're happy with their tropical groove.

For an additional taste of the band's work so far, three more tracks are available at their Soundcloud page. We recommend you hop on Wild Sun's colourful bus early, as before long summer will be upon us and they'll be off to brighten the corners of much bigger stages.
