CREATIVE WORKSHOPS: CoolTan Arts, a local London mental health charity, starts a series of 12-week creative workshops today. Based in Southwark, the workshops cover filmmaking, art, digital art and IT. Free, prebook

LANGUAGE: Fancy learning something new? Over the next three days, Linga Diversa is at Conway Hall offering introduction classes to German, Brazilian-Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. TREES: A lecture at the London Jewish Cultural Centre asks whether we are too sentimental about trees. £15, prebook, 2-4pm

JOINING EUROPE: A lecture, held at the Museum of London, analyses the background to Harold Macmillan’s decision in 1961 for Britain to join the European Community. Free, just turn up, 6pm

JOURNALISM: George Brock, Head of Journalism at City University London and former editor for The Times, discusses his book Out Of Print and the state of journalism today, at Foyles on Charing Cross Road. Free, prebook, 6-8pm

PUZZLED PINT: Have you heard of Puzzled Pint? They’ve been organising quizzes in London for the past three months but they’re a bit dastardly, if you want to pop along tonight then you’ll have to solve the (easy) puzzle on their website in order to learn the location. Free, just turn up, 7-10pm

LONELINESS: "The mix and flux of urban living in London often presents with a decline of community, or, a mixture of communities divided by race, ethnicity, class, and religion." Adlerian Society UK presents a lecture at Conway Hall on the psychological aspects of loneliness and how we can best understand/overcome it. £7/£4, just turn up, 7.30-9pm


Good Cause of the Day

Book ahead to join in with YMCA London South West’s fifth Sleep Easy event. Carrying the tagline ‘sleep rough so others don’t have to’, two sleep-outs will take place simultaneously in Kingston and Wimbledon, where up to 250 people will join in to raise awareness and funds for vulnerable people in the local community. Find out more or sign up here. Both sleep-outs take place on Saturday 25 January, 7pm-6am (hot food and drink available throughout the night), £10

Londoddities

Continuing with this week's Roman theme, here's a section of the Roman wall you probably won't ever get to see. It's buried deep in the basement of the Old Bailey (also known as the Central Criminal Court), and is around 1,800 years old. The Old Bailey stands on a road of the same name, which in turn is named after the ancient wall, or bailey, that engirdled Londinium. Image by M@.
