Fabulous fairytales
Explore a fantasy world of fairytales, art, film, music and trolls at the second Festival of Fairytales for Grown ups at the Bargehouse on South Bank. Tickets for the fairytale shows are just £5 advance, £6 on the door, but you must make time to explore all five floors of this Victorian warehouse and discover what lurks.... from 11-15 December. Marvellous music
Spitalfields Music Winter Festival offers a wonderful mix of site-specific and imaginative events, like an immersive tour of Toynbee Hall and a mini desk opera. Events run from 6-13 December. Bit skint? Rock up for the free Lights On knees-up at Arnold Circus on Saturday 7 December.
Topical theatre
The big red Shed outside the National Theatre continues to stage original and provocative theatre. This winter, see the very famous Rhys Ifans in Protest Song from 16 December - a funny and savage monologue on the reality of the Occupy movement. Once you're done, step out onto the South Bank and you'll be in the midst of Christmas markets with plenty of places to debrief on the drama.
Old-style eating
How about a meal in one of London's oldest restaurants? Get into the Gay Hussar before it closes or try something a bit old-fashioned, like Rules or Simpsons in the Strand. Go for pie in The Newman Arms Pie Room or try Veeraswamy's, the oldest Indian restaurant in the UK.
Afloat on a boat
See the sights and lights of London from the river in a festive take on the City Cruises RiverLights trip along the Thames. That plus mulled wine, carols and the city's pretty illuminations sound like a good way to get away from the bustle of the street and spend a couple of hours tete a tete.
