Alliterative suggestion of the day comes from Historic Royal Palaces, which is offering 'twilight tours of the Tower of London'. The beefeater-led tours take in the main outdoor spaces of the complex, stopping at Traitor's Gate, the Bloody Tower, Tower Green and other areas, with a look inside the church where Anne Boleyn is buried.

We took the tour last night and can vouch that it's by far the most atmospheric way to view the Tower. First and foremost, you get to see one of the world's great buildings without the usual throng of tourists. At times, the Tower precincts can be eerily quiet, until your beefeater guide booms into his patter. Tales of torture, execution and hauntings gain a chilling potency in the dark, and the narrative is more of a performance than a guided tour. Those with fancy cameras (better than ours, anyhow) will find a plethora of opportunities to snap a glowing White Tower from all angles.

Tower Twilight Tours (oddly, long after twilight at 7.30pm) run on select dates throughout winter, beginning on 13 November. Tickets are £25, with 10% discount for Historic Royal Palaces members.
