The Barbican’s Urban Wandering season launches on 18 September, with a packed programme that explores London on film. We've already looked at the architectural strand running through the season, but there's also a mouthwatering selection of cult movies featuring London. We’d particularly recommend the following events:
Thursday 19 September: Bronco Bullfrog
Made on the cheap, with a cast of unknowns, this much-loved 1969 film tackles love and alienation in the streets and surroundings of Stratford. The film was chosen by Iain Sinclair as part of his 70x70 season.
Friday 20 September: A Clockwork Orange
Stanley Kubrick's controversial 1971 film needs little introduction. The film is largely shot on the streets of London, most famously in the Thamesmead Estate, which had just been built.
Saturday 21 September: Naked
Mike Leigh's 1993 film charts a young homeless man's odyssey through the capital. The director joins Gareth Evans for a discussion after the screening.
Sunday 22 September: Underground
A 1928 silent classic, moving through the pubs, lodging houses and tube network of that era, in a story of murder and a love triangle.
Sunday 22 September: Hidden City
Charles Dance and Cassie Stuart track down mysterious images in some choice subterranean London locations, in Stephen Poliakoff's 1988 film.
Wednesday 25 September: I Hired A Contract Killer
Largely filmed on the streets of east London, this 1990 film follows a civil servant attempting to evade a hitman.
Wednesday 25 September: Nighthawks
A 1978 feature by Ron Peck about a teacher who spends his evenings cruising London's gay bars and clubs. The film is followed by a discussion featuring the director.
Friday 27 September: An American Werewolf In London
The 1981 classic of lycanthropic adventures in the capital, including those famous scenes on the Underground.
Sunday 29 September: The Happy Family
A 1952 comedy starring Stanley Holloway, Kathleen Harrison and George Cole, about the owners of a corner shop who refuse to move out for the building of the Festival Hall.
Sunday 29 September: The Sandwich Man
A veritable who's-who of 1960's British comedians (Michael Bentine, Harry H Corbett, Bernard Cribbins, Terry Thomas, Norman Wisdom, and many more), in a light comedy about a professional urban wanderer.
Times and ticket prices vary.
Urban Wandering – Film and the London Landscape takes place at the Barbican Cinemas from 18 September to 2 October 2013.
